Teach STEMSS with our Tech-Infused Modules with EL Strategies

Module Itinerary 

​

Stop 1: Explore the cultural geography of India and investigate urban sustainability and how it impacts economic opportunity and standards of living. Then, reflect on what you have learned and consider how you might tell your own story through ScenceTellng.

 

Stop 2: Explore the STEMSS lesson plan to begin planning your own lesson. You will also learn about the integration of content, using strategies to support EL vocabulary development, technology tools, and assessment. 

​

Stop 3: Explore STEMSS lessons and learn about the different components that make up an effective lesson. Share what you have learned by thinking about color-coding and collaborating with others.

​

Stop 4: Reflect on all that you have learned, then brainstorm activity ideas on teaching India, urban sustainability, and cultural geography through ScienceTelling. Begin thinking about your STEMSS lesson plan idea and what strategy(s) you will include to support your future ELs.

PLEASE NOTE:
Keep in mind this Module is in draft form, and we are looking for your valuable input to help us make it an effective learning tool for teachers. In this Module, we are focusing on the STEMSS lesson plan and 10 important sentences as teaching and learning strategies. One of the changes we will be making is the use of collaborative digital platforms, but for now we are using Google Docs and Slides. We look forward to your feedback!

Expected Duration of Module: 3-4 hours

Module Learning Objectives:
 

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe and apply STEMMS pedagogy

  • lnvestigate the cultural geography of lndia and urban sustainability 

  • Explore ScienceTelling and consider its application in the classroom

  • Identify and use appropriate technologies with instruction

  • Identify and use effective EL strategies with instruction

  • Apply both content and pedagogy in outlining a STEMSS lesson

                         Stop 1: The Colors of India:  Human Geography ScienceTelling

Explore the Stop 1
Learning Presentation

 

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify key elements of cultural geography through the exploration of India

  • Compare and contrast elements of culture from India to your state/country

  • Describe what Urban Sustainability is, and how it impacts economic opportunity and standards of living

  • Identify and describe the economic, social, cultural, and environmental pressures of urban sustainability including environment, energy resources, and threatened cultural traditions

  • Reflect on travel you have taken and how this rich knowledge could be brought into your classroom and enrich the global learners you work with

  • Explore ScienceTelling and how social media, public speaking, and photo and video journals can help tell the story of your experiences

  • Use social media to share an ‘AHA’ moment and a ScienceTelling idea

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the components of an effective STEMSS lesson

  • Identify language supports for diverse learners

  • Apply and reflect on an article using color-coding to reflect what was learned from exploring a STEMSS lesson

  • Using social media, reflect and discuss ideas about strategies learned in Stops 2 and 3

                          Stop 4: Brainstorm, Collaborate and Create

Participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the benefits of teacher and student collaboration using technology

  • Collaborate on ideas and resources for creating a STEMSS lesson to teach about lndia, cultural geography, or urban sustainability using ScienceTelling, technology, and EL strategies to support both content and language objectives
